The Issues

The treaty process in British Columbia is often described as the most complex and important issue facing Canada today. As the three parties - Canada, BC and First Nations - work towards the common goal of building a new relationship negotiations delve deeper and deeper into the interests and needs that underlie each other's positions.

The following section highlights some of the major issues that are integral to modern treaty making in British Columbia: aboriginal rights, self government, land and resources, fishing, forestry and financial issues.

Additional information on each issue is included under the Featured Resources section on each page.
